Family Needs Based Model

Overview

The Family Needs-Based Model (FNBM) program, currently implemented by Macheo with support from Kipawa, is designed to address the multifaceted challenges faced by vulnerable families in Ruiru. The program takes a holistic approach, focusing on food security, education access, healthcare, economic empowerment, and child protection.

Key Achievements in 2024

Families Reached: In 2024, the program assisted 156 families (exceeding the target of 148) and impacted 545 children.

Holistic Interventions:

  • Education Support: School fees were paid for 35 secondary students and 30 Early Childhood Development (ECD) students, while 72 children received school uniforms.

  • Healthcare: 52 children received individual health support, 10 malnourished children were treated, and 67 children received counseling.

  • Shelter & Economic Empowerment: 72 families benefited from improved living conditions, and 124 families participated in economic empowerment initiatives.

  • Rescue and Protection: 13 children were rescued from abuse, and 21 teenage mothers received support.

Success Rate: 81% of the 311 children who exited the program showed improvements in food security, shelter, and education access.

  • Improved Education Access: Scholarship referrals, school feeding, and uniform provision have kept more children in school.

  • Enhanced Family Stability: Economic empowerment programs have provided families with income-generating opportunities.

  • Better Healthcare: Health interventions, including maternal support and malnutrition treatment, have improved child well-being.

  • Strengthened Community Networks: Collaboration with stakeholders like UNTOLD has expanded resources for vulnerable families.

 

Esther


Esther is one woman who has been helped to establish a fruit and vegetable stall near her home. This has enabled her to support her daughter through secondary school and her young son into primary school.

The FNBM program has significantly improved the lives of many families in Ruiru by addressing their core needs. Despite facing challenges such as economic hardships and healthcare barriers, the program continues to foster resilience within the community.
